El Hogar 2019 Medical Mission - Day 2
Our first day of seeing students was a whirlwind, a lovely whirlwind. Roughly 30 kids were measured, weighed, checked for athlete’s foot (which is common here), checked by a dentist, screened for glasses, assessed for high blood pressure, and given a full medical exam (their annual check-up) by one of our two physicians.
Along with the students this year, the doctors also saw several parents and siblings. This, all part of an initiative by the local government, and in partnership with El Hogar to re-unite children with their families of origin whenever possible to keep family structures intact.
Bringing high-level medical expertise to the children of El Hogar has been a priority of our community for the past 8 years. Our very own Kevin Martin has provided medical care to nearly 1,000 children over the years. His wife, Carolyn, has diligently organized all of us, and countless medical records, to make all of this possible. I am honored by their commitment to serve these children and this community.
We slept well after a long day, and now we’re off to church to give thanks to God for this amazing experience! We will write to you all again very soon.
In peace,Melanie
The Annual El Hogar Medical Mission Team from the U.S. and Canada is in Honduras this week (February 15-22). The Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane, Redeemer's Associate for Liturgy and Mission, has agreed to blog and send pictures to document the team's experience. This is Melanie's first trip to El Hogar.
Be sure to read her blog posts, as well.
