El Hogar Medical Mission - Day 7
Thursday was a very special day that took us off-campus to visit the homes of three of the students at El Hogar. It was a humbling and eye-opening experience that made us all the more grateful for the amazing work that El Hogar is doing in this community!
Every family we visited shared with us their gratitude for the program, and told us of their great hopes for the future of their family and community that are possible because of their child’s education.
While public school remains available to many in the community, the most vulnerable children often go without education simply because they are not able to afford proper shoes, uniforms, or pencils and papers that are required to attend school. El Hogar provides these supplies to every student who attends their school.
In addition to their child’s education, many of the mothers are now finding it possible to work part-time while their children are in school. One mother shared with us her process for making home-made tortillas that she sells in the local market. Another expressed her delight in being able to care for her elderly mother now that her children are in school.
Educating a child is never only about that one child, it is about a family, a community, transformed by the grace of God and by organizations like El Hogar.
Grace & Peace,
Melanie
