The work of being the body of Christ, includes being aware in our bodies of the trauma that is stored and triggered when we encounter one another. Our contemplative awakening has purchase on the social fabric we weave. This spiritual, mindful, practice of self-awareness is rooted in the Christian contemplative lineage. It was Paul, who spent two years in deep contemplative retreat (2 Corinthians 12:2), who would teach that we are, together, “the body of Christ.” It was after his 40 days in the desert that Jesus publicly proclaimed the meaning of his baptism, “to bring freedom to the captive."
“Justice is what love looks like in public” Cornel West
These two day retreats at Transfiguration Spirituality Center will weave together Christian contemplative awareness of how our bodies keep score, how race operates as a floating signifier, tied to body-memory, how we might experience liberation from “the patterns of this world” through the “renewing of our minds” (Romans 12:2), how we might “have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus,” and how anti-racism is a spiritual practice.
The Women’s Retreat will be led by the Rev. Renee Kanagy and co-facilitated by the Rev. Troy Bronsink and the Rev. Daniel Hughes. The Men’s Retreat will be led by the Rev. Troy Bronsink and co-facilitated by the Rev. Daniel Hughes.
