Dr. Ellen F. Davis is the Amos Ragan Kearns Distinguished Professor of Bible and Practical Theology at Duke University Divinity School. She is the author of elevenbooks and many articles. Her research interests focus on how biblical interpretation bears on the life of faith communities and their responses to urgent public issues, particularly the environmental crisis and interfaith relations. Her most recent books are Opening Israel’s Scriptures (Oxford University Press, 2019), Preaching the Luminous Word: Biblical Sermons and Essays (Eerdmans 2016), and Biblical Prophecy: Perspectives for Christian Theology, Discipleship and Ministry (Westminster John Knox, 2014).
Dr. Davis is a highly renowned biblical scholar of the Old Testament. She has been at Duke since 2001 and has taught at Union Theological Seminary (New York City), Yale Divinity School, and Virginia Theological Seminary. In 2010, Dr. Davis received Duke’s Outstanding University Scholar/Teacher of the Year Award. In June 2024, she was also listed as one of the ten important women theologians.
Dr. Davis is a cradle Episcopalian, lay leader, and active theological consultant within the Anglican Communion. Since 2004, she has worked with the Episcopal Church of Sudan, the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, and elsewhere in East Africa to develop theological education, community health, and sustainable agriculture. Dr. Davis will start our adult educational programming in 2025. She will be interviewed by Redeemer's own Dr. Angela Erisman, another scholar of the Hebrew Bible.
