Rise & Shine - March 31
What is bigoted language, imagery, etc?
The Rise and Shine discussion group meets Sunday mornings at 9:00 am in the Parlor. Adults from the 8:00 & 10:00 services gather for discussions that are relevant to their lives through the lens of a current topic and scriptural references. This week's discussion outline can be read or downloaded below.
Surely we can all agree that the Klu Klux Klan is a hate group and thus one we would not support. However, back at the turn of the 20th Century, the KKK was considered so mainstream that one Georgia women's college adopted the symbols, names, and practices for class groups on campus. And some of them continue today.
Wesleyan College in Macon has long history of KKK symbols and practices. Click here to read the article from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
What does this mean for other symbols or mascots we still use today? What if they are linked to a caricature of an ethnic group with a power imbalance?
Join Kate and Mitch Haralson to discuss this at Rise & Shine this Sunday, March 31 at 9:00 am.
