The Holy Spirit: Gift-Giving, Church-Empowering, and Disciple-Sending

The Church exists in time, place, and space by the power of the Holy Spirit. She builds up the Church, giving it meaning and significance as a foretaste of God’s renewed and reconciled creation. Believers are unified and gathered in the Church by the Holy Spirit, who guides the unified Church into freedom and fellowship. While believers share a common experience of new life due to their unity in God’s Spirit, the Spirit’s works in individual believers are distinct, allowing the Church to be adorned with a myriad of life-giving gifts to be used in ministries and worship to the glory of God. In the final series of our fall season, we will look in depth at the nature and works of the Holy Spirit among God’s people in ancient Israel and in the early and evolving Church. The series ends with a discussion of how we believe the Holy Spirit moves and is moving at the Church of the Redeemer. This series concludes our exploration of the Church as a cosmic and present reality and an evolving living organism that partners with our triune God to realize our ultimate eternal existence within a restored creation. This series features two of CoR’s own, Dr. Angela Erisman, Hebrew Bible scholar and the author of The Wilderness Itineraries: Genre, Geography, and Growth of Torah, and Dr. Matthew Solomon, New Testament scholar. Dr. Solomon is an expert in New Testament Textual Criticism, Papyrology, Early Christianity, and Interpretive Methods.

Session 1. Nov 10. God’s Spirit in the Hebrew Bible. What was its role? Why was it important? Why did God “need” a Spirit? (Angela Erisman, Ph.D.)

Session 2. Nov 17. God’s Spirit—The Holy Spirit in the Christian Tradition. A central role for The Holy Spirit in the life of Christians and the Church. (Matt Solomon, Ph.D.)

Session 3. Nov 24. The Holy Spirit as a Gift-Giver in the Life of the Church of the Redeemer.
