Theology Circle Movie Night
"Backs Against The Wall: The Howard Thurman Story"
Sunday, March 8
6:00 pm, Parlor
Church of the Redeemer’s Theology Circle will show the PBS Special, “Backs Against The Wall: The Howard Thurman Story” as an introduction to their next book, “Jesus and the Disinherited”, by Howard Thurman.
Journey Films describes the film as an exploration of “the extraordinary life and legacy of one of the most important religious figures of the 20th century. Born the grandson of slaves, Thurman became a “spiritual foundation” for the Civil Rights Movement, inspiring many of its leaders including Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesse Jackson and Congressman John Lewis."
According to Beacon Press, Jesus and the Disinherited, first published in 1949 is “a brilliant and compassionate look at God’s work in our lives. As we struggle today with issues of poverty, racism, and spiritual disengagement, Howard Thurman’s discerning reading of the message of renewal through self-love as exemplified in the life of Jesus resonates powerfully once again."
All are welcome to both the film and to join the discussion of the book. Join us Sunday, March 8 at 6:00 pm in the Parlor for movie night. And on Sunday, April 5 at 6:00 pm in the Library for the first discussion of the book.
