Today, the Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane offers our meditation. Today’s musical offering, Herzlich tut mich verlangen, BWV 727 by J. S. Bach, is played by Thomas Heidenreich on the organ. The hymn tune for O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded, the tune was originally a secular love song and was combined with lyrics written by Christoph Knoll, to form the German hymn Herzlich tut mich verlangen. The hymn is a “geistliches Sterbelied” (spiritual song for the dying) that begins with the lyrics “I do desire dearly a blessed end” and was written during the plague of 1599.
