In Memoriam: Rev. Bruce A. Freeman

Bruce A. Freeman
September 9, 1959 – April 13, 2026

Dear Redeemer Family,

I am saddened today to share the news of the Rev. Bruce Freeman’s death. Bruce, the fifth rector of Church of the Redeemer, and my predecessor, was a loving, thoughtful, delightful, forthright, funny, caring, and faithful man who brought joy to all who knew him. During his time at Redeemer, the church completed two capital campaigns, redesigned the sanctuary, and began not one but two new worship services – The Banquet and the Celtic service. He also guided the community in an intentional shift to focus on how our building and resources could be used for the benefit of the people outside of our congregation. He oversaw the creation of the Stewardship Board and the Nominating Committee. He helped foster a culture of generosity, creativity, warmth, and stability.

And he did all these things with the best smile – a smile that made others smile too. I love asking people to tell me Bruce stories. It always immediately brings a smile to their faces, and a knowing laugh. Even stories about disagreements with him are told with smiles and gratitude and a sense of shared love that is obvious. What a gift.

I count myself fortunate to have followed in his footsteps because he left the Church of the Redeemer in such wonderful, healthy shape. But beyond that, I was blessed to call him a friend. He always made time for me, for questions I had about things that had happened at Redeemer during his tenure, for advice – only when I asked for it, never unsolicited, and always wise and thoughtful. I would schedule an hour to talk with him, and we would talk for two. He made me laugh, he made me feel seen, heard, loved, and respected. And I am no special case: This is how people who knew Bruce felt when speaking with him.

As many of you know, Bruce has spent the last few months in a fierce battle with cancer. His wife Dana, has been an unwavering support and caregiver throughout this time. They taught us so much about grace, hope, humor, and love. Please pray for Dana and the Freeman family in the days ahead. We will let you know about Memorial plans as we know about them.

As Jesus once said in a parable about someone who was entrusted with the care of God’s people and stewarded them with care, we now say to our priest, brother, and friend: Well done, good and faithful servant.

Dear Bruce, thank you for your service to Church of the Redeemer, to the whole church, to your family and friends, to all of us who know and love you. You are a blessing. May you rest in peace and rise in glory.

Your friend and brother in Christ Jesus,

Philip Hart DeVaul
