Holy Eucharist and distribution of ashes in the Sanctuary.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in The Episcopal Church, marking the beginning of the 40-day period of fasting and penitence leading up to Easter. It is named for the practice of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of worshipers during Ash Wednesday services. These ashes serve as a sign of penitence and a reminder of human mortality. The observance invites Christians to a season of self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial, as well as reading and meditating on God’s holy Word (Book of Common Prayer, p. 265). Ash Wednesday is a significant day in the liturgical calendar, setting the tone for the reflective and penitential season of Lent. (Source: Episcopal Church Glossary)
