Church of the Redeemer

Service Opportunities

At Church of the Redeemer, we believe that every act of service matters. Whether it’s a one-time volunteer shift, a seasonal drive, or simply showing up to support our neighbors, these moments are all part of how we live love in the world.

That’s why, alongside our deeper partnerships in the Ministry of Service, Justice, & Community, we also offer a wide range of Service Opportunities—ways to engage that are meaningful, flexible, and accessible for all.

How Service Opportunities Are Different from Partnerships

As we clarify our focus and structure around mission, it’s important to understand the distinction between our ministry partnerships and our service opportunities:

Ministry PartnershipsService Opportunities
Rooted in long-term, mutual relationshipOften short-term, seasonal, or event-based
Aligned with Redeemer’s current focus area (systemically excluded youth, ages 13–18)May or may not align with that focus area
Shaped collaboratively—shared planning and purposeRedeemer responds to existing work already being led by others
Stewarded by the Service, Justice, & Community Board

Supported by Service, Justice, & Community Board as well as other ministries, lay leaders, or volunteers

May involve deeper financial support and storytellingMay be promoted and encouraged, but not institutionally prioritized

Why Service Opportunities Still Matter Deeply

Some organizations and causes may not align directly with our current focus area, but they continue to speak to the hearts of Redeemer parishioners. These opportunities remain a vital part of our church’s life and witness.

Service opportunities:

  • Honor the diverse callings of our congregation
  • Allow people to step into service at their own pace and interest
  • Provide on-ramps to deeper engagement
  • Keep Redeemer connected to a wider network of good work happening in our city

Examples of Service Opportunities

  • Serving with Freestore Foodbank
  • Participating in seasonal community events or clean-up days
  • Joining donation drives or food collections
  • Supporting partner events from other ministry areas (Education, Pastoral Care, Worship, etc.)

These actions may not always be part of Redeemer’s focus area, but they are Spirit-led, community-honoring responses that invite us to live generously and compassionately.

How Are They Coordinated?

Because service opportunities vary in scope and alignment, they are often:

  • Led by lay leaders or small groups
  • Sponsored by ministries outside of the Service, Justice, & Community structure
  • Supported with promotion, signups, and logistics through staff as needed, but primarily led by lay-leaders.

While these opportunities are not owned or directed by the Service, Justice, & Community Board, the board plays a vital role by:

  • Creating space for these opportunities to be named, shared, and celebrated
  • Uplifting parishioner-led service as a vital expression of Redeemer’s mission
  • Providing a visible platform for these offerings to be acknowledged and connected across the parish

This approach allows for greater clarity in organizational focus while still empowering a diverse and Spirit-led culture of service. It honors the work individuals and groups are already doing while making room for collective discernment and shared storytelling.

Our goal is not to centralize every effort, but to empower participation and honor what’s already happening, all while maintaining clarity on our church-wide focus and commitments.
