A Story About People
| Guest SpeakerA Story About People
And I'm standing here today because of this place. It's very significant, but ultimately because of you, the people. The story today of the naming is a very important story about names and Jesus's name, and there's so much to unpack and what his name means. There's so much to unpack about Jesus' life and how this marks the beginning of a new kingdom.
In a new age, in a new era. There's so much to unpack about this story of the Holy Name, about Jesus's circumcision. We can tie it, Jesus being circumcised, God's salvation is in the here and the now, in the physical, in the flesh, in our every day. We can do all that. But the story of the name is about people being faithful to God and to each other.
I think that's the story of Church of the Redeemer. I know it's been the story. I know it will continue to be the story of Redeemer, and I thank you personally for being faithful to that story.

Rector's Blog Throwback Series, The More You Love
| The Rev. Philip DeVaulRector's Blog Throwback Series, The More You Love
As part of our When Love Shows Up Throwback Series we are re-posting this podcast which was originally posted on August 25, 2022
Of course, I loved music, but somehow the number, the size of the CD collection became just as important as actually listening and enjoying the music. I assumed CDs, which supplanted both vinyl records and cassette tapes, would last forever, and that my collection would grow along with me and last me a lifetime. And then, of course, the iPod happened. And then streaming services, and everything changed. Up until very recently I was incredibly resistant to the new ways of listening to music. I still have a CD player in my car – and I still use it! I still love CDs to an unreasonable degree. And my daughter recently got a Discman (I have no idea how) and has been dipping into my collection.
But something has shifted in me in the last couple years. I don’t think about the numbers anymore. I don’t think about collecting. I just listen. In some ways this digital development has freed me to be obsessed not with CDs, but with music itself. As a result, my palate has expanded, and I’m branching out and trying new things – allowing new kinds of music into my ears and heart. I find myself appreciating genres and artists I wouldn’t have given a chance before.
There’s a book on my shelf that says on the cover, “The more you love music, the more music you love.” I have found that to be truer and truer since letting go of the numbers game.

The Birth of Salvation
| The Rev. Philip DeVaulThe Birth of Salvation
We have this idea of how God should save us. We as a people,
we pray for salvation, and on tonight we celebrate the birth of Jesus, which we
say is the salvation of the world. The people who are begging for salvation in
Jesus' story, they're not talking about wanting to go to the right place when
they die.
They are hoping that the place where they live in the here and now will be saved. They're not praying for something special and magical to happen to their souls later. They are praying for peace now, for justice, now, for reconciliation and healing for people to get past the ways that we harm each other, now.
So, if God's going to save us in that way, God should send someone in who's going to really clean house and take care of business. And I mean now. And God sends a baby, the audacity of God.

Rector's Blog, Your Perfect Christmas
| The Rev. Philip DeVaulRector's Blog, Your Perfect Christmas
As you are reading this, Christmas is about to happen. And you are probably anxious about at least one thing, probably several. Some of your anxiety is obvious and conscious and articulable: You still have shopping to do, your house is a mess, people are coming over, what will you wear, how will you cook everything and wrap everything? Some of what you’re feeling is inexpressible but just as palpable: Sheer anxiety shooting through your subconscious, silently running the numbers on all the ways things could go wrong.
I wish you could see the cards hanging in my Dining Room. I wish you could hold in your heart just how beautiful things can be on the day that things go wrong, when they are chaotic beyond imagination.
I am giving you permission to screw up this Christmas. I am giving you permission to overcook something. Or undercook it. Or both. Break a plate. Stain something irreparably. Bring up politics even though everyone knows you should NOT BRING UP POLITICS. You can be too cranky or get the wrong gift. You can disappoint yourself, and you can even disappoint someone else. I know you don’t want any of these things. I know this. It’s not like you’re trying to screw up. You want to get it right and I want you to get it right. And also, even if you do all the wrong things, God is showing up.
I want to invite you to make love the center of your Christmas. Not flawlessness: Love. Not met expectations: Love. Not simplicity: Love. Not idealism: Love.

Love Letters
| The Rev. Philip DeVaulLove Letters
...maybe one of the most frustrating things for me about God, and I mean genuinely something I really get frustrated with God about is that God's existence and presence is always deniable if you want it to be. It is a matter of faith. God shows up in Jesus Christ and you can look at Jesus and go, nah, I don't buy it.
You can have a moment of deep and utter spiritual clarity and understand that you belong to God completely, and then the next day you can go, ah, I was just in a good mood, I don't know what that was about. We are completely capable of denying God's presence as it changes our lives because we want everything to be perfect when love shows up, it needs to feel exactly the way I expected it to feel and look exactly the way I want it to look. That’s how I'll know when love shows up.
Maybe this is why we have such a hard time with Christmas. I'm one of those people who loves Christmas season. I've got my Christmas playlist all queued up and ready to go, and day after Thanksgiving I put it on and I drive myself nuts all until Epiphany. Don't forget, Christmas season goes for 12 days, right?
So I just go and go and go and get the tree up and do everything. And yet, each year. I'm like, that was it. Was that it? Did it happen? Was it Christmas? Was I joyful enough? Did I feel it? Did I feel it? Did it happen? I better get teary-eyed during O Come All Ye faithful, or it's not really Christmas.
Did I feel the love from the right people? Did I love the right people? Call the right people, text the right people. Was the steak cooked the right way? Was it all perfect?

Rector's Blog, When We Are Talking
| The Rev. Philip DeVaulRector's Blog, When We Are Talking
Do I always know what I believe or why? No. No I don’t. I have made a decision to be a religious Christian. Sometimes it makes sense to me and sometimes it doesn’t. For me, religion is similar to marriage in that, I don’t get to be all in only when it makes sense to me or when I feel like it. One day a long time ago I realized I believed in God and that I needed to take that seriously, and I have spent much of my life since then trying to do just that, however imperfectly. And here we are.
I remember one skeptical ex-Christian friend of mine asking me, “But how do you know for sure that you’re right?” And I surprised him by quickly answering, “Oh, I’m not sure at all.” I could be wrong about Jesus. I could be wrong about all of this. But I have decided and am still deciding to try to live my life as if there is a God and that God is Love and that Love has something to do with me. This is the best I can do.

Advent Lessons and Carols 2022
| Brett ScottAdvent Lessons and Carols 2022
On Christmas Eve in 1918, Eric Milner-White, Dean of King's College, Cambridge, offered a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols to the city of Cambridge. The service has since become a worldwide holiday tradition. The success of the Christmas Eve service prompted Milner-White to craft a service of Advent Lessons and Carols for the first Sunday of Advent in 1934. Our own service is adapted from this form, and it calls to mind through word and song the joyful expectation of Advent.
The Lessons and Carols service was for many years a staple at Church of the Redeemer, and we hope, as we return to this beautiful service, that it will become once again an annual tradition for our entire parish and for the city of Cincinnati.
Listen in during the week before Christmas and meditate on a series of carols, hymns, readings, and the seven great “O” Antiphons, one of the great Medieval inheritances of the Church. O come, Emmanuel!
