Advent Lessons and Carols
| The Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane![The Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/melanie-slane_755_small.jpg)
Advent Lessons and Carols
On Christmas Eve in 1918, Eric Milner-White, Dean of King's College, Cambridge, offered a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols to the city of Cambridge. The service has since become a worldwide holiday tradition. The success of the Christmas Eve service prompted Milner-White to craft a service of Advent Lessons and Carols for the first Sunday of Advent in 1934. Our own service is adapted from this form, and it calls to mind through word and song the joyful expectation of Advent.
The Lessons and Carols service was for many years a staple at Church of the Redeemer, and we hope, as we return to this beautiful service, that it will be become once again an annual tradition for our entire parish and for the city of Cincinnati. This year Advent Lessons and Carols will be available online as a podcast! Listen in during the week before Christmas and meditate on a series of carols, hymns, readings, and the seven great “O” Antiphons, one of the great Medieval inheritances of the Church. O come, Emmanuel!

Rest in Peace
| The Rev. Philip DeVaul![The Rev. Philip DeVaul](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/philip-devaul_215_small.jpg)
Rest in Peace
"In the church we say Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory, as we turn our attention towards the time when we will experience, unfiltered, the Love for which we all were made. And while I believe that in death we will know eternal life, and we will be able to rest from the pain and (often self-inflicted) strife we find on Earth, I do not believe that we have to die before we ever know what it means to rest, to let go, to say I love you and talk about what has been and what’s coming – to hold hands and remember our belonging."

For God's Sake, Breathe
| The Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane![The Rev. Melanie W. J. Slane](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/melanie-slane_755_small.jpg)
For God's Sake, Breathe
"Breath. The Ruach. The wind that swept over the face of deep at the very beginning of creation. The pulse of life. Find your breath. Use your voice. The breath is there for you from the moment you begin until you take your last. Breath is so essential to life, yet we often don't realize we're doing it. Evangelism works that way, too.
The beginning of new life in the Church requires these tools and more to guide her and provide support for the difficult process of giving birth to Jesus in the world. You too must visualize the Kingdom. Repeat the refrain of our mantras. Move with the Holy Spirit. Adapt. Change. Cry to God for help. Give thanks in all things and for God’s sake, breathe."

The Birth of John the Baptist: Journeying with Community
| Anny Stevens-Gleason, The Rev. Philip DeVaul![Anny Stevens-Gleason](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/dsc01363-edit-edit-edit_660_small.jpg)
The Birth of John the Baptist: Journeying with Community
In this week's episode, Anny and Phil see the Way of Love as a journey with community. The witness of Zechariah and Elizabeth, who bring infant John to the temple to be circumcised, reminds us of the importance of our faith community to sustaining the Way of Love. Just as the community did for John's family, communities provide a place for discernment sometimes challenging us and other times affirming us. Communities celebrate and mark important moments along the journey.

Rest Dysfunction
| The Rev. Philip DeVaul![The Rev. Philip DeVaul](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/philip-devaul_215_small.jpg)
Rest Dysfunction
But there is another side to our relationships with disorders and diseases. When we step away from what we wish were true and sit in the acceptance of what actually is, we are revealed so much about who we are. There is revelation and understanding that emerges from within the dysfunction – and it’s not just some trite generality like, “everyone has weaknesses”.

Your People Need Comfort

Your People Need Comfort
This Advent season we are again invited to prepare the way of our Lord. We are invited to enter the season in a quieter way. Acknowledging the tumult around us on so many different levels, allowing ourselves moments of respite, even rest. And in this quieter place might we listen more carefully, more intently, for the voices that guide us to Christ. Might we release any preconceptions of who those voices might come from, how the bearers that this good news will be dressed, or what they will eat, what they might say or do. Let us be open to how the Holy Spirit manifests before us and the invitation we are given to participate in this season of waiting and expectancy.

Mary and Elizabeth: Journeying with Family and Friends
In this week's episode, host Anny Stevens-Gleason and the Rev. Philip DeVaul invited to see the Way of Love as a journey that can expand to include family and friends. Mary said yes to the call to birth Jesus, God's Word, into the world and immediately went in haste to share her good news with her cousin Elizabeth who lived in the Judean Hills, a four-day journey. Isn't that what happens when we hear good news? We are driven to go and tell others. The Way of Love is good news that demands to be shared.

Annunciation - Saying Yes to the Journey
| Anny Stevens-Gleason, The Rev. Philip DeVaul![Anny Stevens-Gleason](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/dsc01363-edit-edit-edit_660_small.jpg)
Annunciation - Saying Yes to the Journey
Host Anny Stevens-Gleason and the Rev. Philip DeVaul orient themselves to the Way of Love and see the Way of Love as a journey that begins by saying yes to God, called to birth new life into the world. The call is gentle, yet powerful. A call fully embraced will grow beyond our imagination, spilling out of ourselves for our family, friends, and community and into the world. This episode invites us to join Mary on her encounter with the Angel, who announced that she will conceive and bear a son. The episode is intended to launch us into not just studying but birthing and living the Way of Love.
"Don't Be Afraid," by Ana Hernandez and Fran McKendree is sung at the end of the episode by Anny Stevens-Gleason.

I Am Thankful for You
| The Rev. Philip DeVaul![The Rev. Philip DeVaul](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/philip-devaul_215_small.jpg)
I Am Thankful for You
Naming gratitude is important because you are actively naming things that have nothing to do with what you have earned or achieved. Think about it. You don’t thank people for giving you things you earned. You thank people when they do things that make you forget about earning. You give thanks for beauty and generosity and forgiveness and kindness and friendship and honesty and faithfulness. That right there is a list of things that you cannot earn or achieve. They are living embodiments of Grace: Gifts of God for the people of God. Gratitude is the antidote to the culture of earning. Gratitude is a recognition of just how much of your daily life is a gift. Gratitude is an acknowledgment of your belonging to God.
