A Different Level of Compassion

A Different Level of Compassion
In this episode of Interrupting Grace, Anny Stevens-Gleason takes a look at Church of the Redeemer's long time relationship with Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) in conversations with past champion, Hollis Bass and with more recent volunteers, Sarah and Steve Nord. Hollis shares some history of Church of the Redeemer's involvement as well as what has been our standard set-up. Then Sarah and Steve talk about the effect of volunteering with this ministry has had on them as volunteers. Although the current pandemic may require some long term changes to the IHN structure, the involvement will surely remain as fruitful. As Sarah puts it, volunteering with IHN "gives you a different level of compassion."

Imagination and Regathering
"I know we want to be together. I know we miss sharing Communion. I encourage us to use our imagination in order to see how God is working in our midst during this time. How are you being transformed? What have you begun to see differently? How will you allow this time to change the rest of your life?"

Truly Biblical Times
"As I think about the kinds of times in which we live I keep holding on to this quote from Oscar Wilde’s De Prefundis “I see also that to Christ imagination was simply a form of love and that to him love was Lord in the fullest meaning of the phrase. “ This idea that part of living the lives of love for which we are called is using our imaginations. Is looking at the world imaginatively."

Sharing in the Work with God

Sharing in the Work with God
"We see the writing on the wall. We hear the voice of Jesus Christ. We are a predominantly White congregation with a stated desire to make an impact on our city. We are on a mission to promote justice, peace, and love for the purpose of healing and restoration. We work for and with and alongside the God of real and true Love, Mercy, and Justice. This means that work for racial healing must be an intentional part of what we do next."

Justice and Love
| The Rev. Philip DeVaul![The Rev. Philip DeVaul](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/philip-devaul_215_small.jpg)
Justice and Love
"The need to fight systemic racism and dismantle white supremacy in America should not be a partisan issue for Christians. To follow Jesus in this time and in this country is to pursue real, measurable justice and equity for people of every race. And in this particular time, we are seeing an obvious need to seek justice and equity for our Black siblings. If Christian Republicans and Democrats are going to argue about this, they should be arguing about the best ways to destroy racism – not whether or not it exists. They should be debating the government’s role in dismantling a system of white supremacy – not quibbling over whether or not white supremacy is real."

A Story to Break Your Heart
| The Rev. Mitchell Bojarski![The Rev. Mitchell Bojarski](https://www.redeemer-cincy.org/uploads/images/mitch_359_small.jpg)
A Story to Break Your Heart
"Our country has, through its whole history, chosen some people to value less than a sparrow. And so, our gospel for today has not been true for them. While they are valued by God more than the sparrows, our country has not valued them more than the sparrows. And so huge numbers of people in our country and around the world have taken their anger and their frustration and their mourning to the streets, because their hearts have broken. For many of them, their hearts have broken again. And so, their mourning and their anger has poured out into the streets. They are telling us what it’s like to be valued less than the animals.
We have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of work to do as Christians, as Americans, to make sure that this gospel for today is true for all people. That everyone, when asked, “Aren’t you worth more than many sparrows?”, can know that the answer is unequivocally, “yes”."
