Dear Redeemer family,
Over the past several years, our church has experienced significant growth in worship attendance, membership, programming, pastoral care, outreach, and community engagement. As our parish continues to evolve, we have been evaluating how our staffing structure can best support the ministry and mission of Redeemer for years to come.
After careful discernment, we have made the decision to establish a full-time Director of Music position. This decision was not made quickly or lightly. Music is central to our worship life and one of the defining strengths of Church of the Redeemer. As a parish of our size and complexity, we believe that a full-time music leader will provide the capacity, presence, and long-term leadership necessary to support our choirs, musicians, worship planning, music academy, volunteer development, and the continued growth of our music ministry.
I recognize that this announcement may bring questions, concerns, and emotions. Change often does, particularly when it involves a ministry that is deeply loved and when relationships have been built over many years. We want to acknowledge those feelings with respect and care.
The most difficult part of this decision is that it will mean the departure of our Assistant Minister for Traditional Music, Dr. Brett Scott. Since Brett, who is Professor of Ensembles and Conducting at the UC’s College-Conservatory of Music, joined us a little over 11 years ago, he has helped to transform our choir, has brought great talent into our midst, helped train magnificent singers, conductors, and organists, and founded our Every Voice Music Academy. Beyond his immense talent and impressive accomplishments, Brett has been a kind, gentle, and thoughtful presence among us. Working alongside him has brought me great joy. He is a friend. He is a gift and a blessing. When the time comes for him to depart, he will be leaving with our admiration and gratitude.
As we begin the search for a full-time Director of Music, our goal is not to diminish the ministry that has brought us to this moment, but to build upon it. We are seeking a leader who can help us strengthen and expand an already vibrant music program while supporting the growing needs of our congregation.
In the coming weeks, I will share more information about the search process. I ask for your prayers, patience, and trust as we move through this transition together. Church of the Redeemer has always been a community that embraces both gratitude for our past and hope for our future. I believe this step positions us to continue offering inspiring worship and faithful ministry for generations to come.
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Philip †
